omg.. do they have facebook?

Here's something that happens often.

Person: OMG, I have a story to tell you. It's not about someone you know, but it's crazy!
*the story is told*
Friend of person: Wow, that is intense!..
..
..
Do they have Facebook?!
Person: Yeah, I'll link you to their profile.

This happens, so many times, to so many different people.
BE CAREFUL:
- Don't post anything and everything, make sure you know who can see what. Not only does stalking occur, but people can also steal identities. It has been done, and is still happening everywhere.

i know what you did last summer...because i saw it on myspace

Love social networking sites?
Here are a couple of reasons why:

Communication with friends, family, or colleagues has become easier with the development of the web. Instead of meeting in a certain place, classmates can discuss a school activity by all chatting on a site, saving time and effort. People are now connected by common interests, purposes, and goals. People from all over the world can now mingle with just the click of a button.

One of those people who refuses to join a social network site?
Could it be because of the following:

Social networking sites have become likely places for identity theft and fraud. As you have to provide certain information such as your e-mail address, name, and location, it becomes easier for those with bad intentions to easily do wrong by your name. Which brings me to my second point, if someone is pretending to be somebody else, they can make you believe that they are offering a business opportunity, ask to meet up with you, or even take your money. This all makes it a lot easier for someone to stalk or harass you online.

Am i giving out too much information?

So i was wasting time, editing my Facebook profile when i thought to myself...am i telling people too much ?
social networking sites allow others to know a person’s contact information, interests, habits, and whereabouts. We all tell ourselves we're smart enough not to give our phone number out on the net or personal info about where we live and work. But what about all those random followers on Facebook who can see our comments about what were doing one night or who we're seeing?
We've got to admit we all check what our friend's are up to through these sites, but when does this info get too much? Harmful or not, are we just making it easier for people to stalk us?

Privacy continued...

This is the link for the document mentioned below in the message from facebook. http://www.box.net/shared/89ebnd71i9

I only read a bit but it was still interesting and yet shocking to read and understand the extent to which facebook stores and logs information about its users and the actions that they take.

Personally, I think I will definately be reviewing the privacy settings on the social networking sites that I use!

New Privacy Settings

I used to use MySpace about 3 years ago and the other day I decided I would just log in to see if anyone still used it or if I had any notifications/message/requests. After logging in the page redirected me to a page outlining new privacy settings that had been established.

Also, on the 26th of March I received the following update in my facebook inbox.

(Taken from http://www.socialwork.utoronto.ca/Assets/Alumni/facebook-logo.png, 23/4/10)

I found this to be very interesting. Maybe social networking sites such as MySpace and facebook are becoming increasingly aware of the (often) media-fuelled controversy regarding privacy settings and options.

Stalking or surfing?

Most people I have spoken to have admitted that they have at least once visited a certain person's page or profile a number of times. But does this count as stalking? How does stalking differ from just catching up on what a friend is doing by visiting their profile a couple of times?

(taken from http://reface.me/wp-content/uploads/facebook-stalking.jpg 22/04/10)

According to yourdictionary.com, the legal definition of stalking is as follows: A form of harassment generally comprised of repeated persistent following with no legitimate reason and with the intention of harming, or so as to arouse anxiety or fear of harm in the person being followed. Stalking may also take the form of harassing telephone calls, computer communications, letter-writing, etc.

But I think that stalking definitions should evolve to include repeated persistent following with a legitimate reason - the legitimate reason being to constantly be up-to-date and know everything that a certain person is doing. I think the act of stalking doesn't always have to have an intention of harming someone or just having harmful intentions.

Cyberstalking Case in the US

I found this interest link: http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2004/04/3694.ars
If you have been stalked maybe you can understand the feelings felt by Joelle Ligon (harrassed victim in the article). Might be an intersting read for you!

Welcome =)

Has an unwanted somebody stalked you via Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc? Have you received friend requests from people you didn't even like or get along with from high school? Do your enemies friends try to stalk you out? Do people add you just to delete you after viewing your photo albums?
